Individual therapy

Gestalt is a German word, a noun that has no direct translation and is generally accepted to mean a pattern, shape, figure, configuration or constellation. It is often used to encompass a concept of completeness. The Oxford dictionary defines Gestalt as an organized whole that is perceived as more than the sum of its parts. Other sources give variations along the lines of the physical, biological, psychological, or symbolic configuration of a pattern of elements so unified as a whole that all its characteristics cannot be derived from a simple sum of its parts.

A Gestalt therapist or practitioner examines the perceptions and beliefs people use to understand their reality. As an approach, Gestalt is composed of a wide range of methodology and techniques focused on what a person feels and projects to the world. It does not mean that intellect and interpretation are excluded, but that conceptualization is second on the scale of refinement of an experience and feeling while building a phenomenological representation or picture of awareness.

When we become truly aware, our behavior changes and our personality constellation shifts. Awareness is achieved by the psychological process of the individual, while investigating the current experience of the person in the environment. In Gestalt, the strengthening of awareness is not only the primary method and initiator of cognitive and affective change, but the root intention and ultimate goal. In this context, it can be said that Gestalt is growth, change, education, therapy and holistic inquiry together as a whole.

In Gestalt we are encouraged to empty the mind, loosen the intellect and get closer to our senses, to be guided with an open mind and heart to what vibrates, lives and opens in the moment, which is our emotions. It reminds us that the past is memory and that the future is an imaginative projection and that only we have the power to shape our lives - NOW. Gestalt invites us, through the cultivation of awareness and actively
experimenting to welcome change.
